Steffenshammer

On the work and lives of the smiths

It is the last of its kind, Steffenskotten in Gelpetal. A functioning cottage forge. The Bergisch water cottage has remained unchanged since it was built in the mid-18th century. The waterwheel uses the power of the dammed Gelpebach to drive the hammer.

Visit the cottage and find out that refined steel was the big seller back then. High-quality steel for tools that guaranteed real quality “Made in Remscheid”. Ironmongery and tools were also produced here. The hammer was in operation until 1928.

The hammer provides an insight into the world back then. The “Kiepe” is right next door. This was once a small forge house with a typical timber frame. This is how people lived and worked in the past. Take a look for yourself.

Hiking tip:
A visit to Steffenshammer can be ideally combined with a hike through the idyllic Gelpetal. Along the Industriegeschichtspfad Historisches Gelpetal (Historic Gelpetal Industrial History Trail), you will come across other witnesses to the industrial history of the past. So get on your way.
